In his 112th episode of the “Mann Ki Baat” radio program, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for widespread utilization of the newly launched National Anti-Narcotics Helpline ‘Manas’ as a crucial resource in India’s fight against drug addiction.
During the broadcast, PM Modi emphasized the escalating concern over drug abuse and its effects on families across the nation. “In Mann Ki Baat, I have consistently addressed the challenges posed by drug addiction. Every parent fears the possibility of their child being drawn into the world of drugs,” Modi noted, setting the stage for the introduction of ‘Manas.’
The helpline, officially inaugurated recently, provides a toll-free number—1933—through which individuals can access vital advice and support related to drug rehabilitation. “This is a very big step in the fight against drugs,” Modi declared, stressing the importance of this initiative in offering essential assistance to those affected by addiction. He encouraged anyone needing help or information about drug recovery to reach out via the helpline.
PM Modi assured that all communications made through ‘Manas’ would remain confidential, aiming to foster a safe environment for those seeking help. He also encouraged the public to use the helpline for reporting drug-related information, further supporting the role of community involvement in addressing drug abuse. “All the information shared with Manas will be confidential. I urge people, families, and organizations committed to making India drug-free to make extensive use of Manas,” he added.
The MANAS (Madak Padarth Nisedh Asuchna Kendra) portal was launched by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on July 18. This initiative includes the toll-free number, a dedicated web portal, a mobile app, and integration with the UMANG app. These platforms are designed to facilitate anonymous, 24×7 communication with the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), offering advice on de-addiction and enabling reports on drug trafficking.
Additionally, in response to the issue of illegal drug cultivation, the NCB, in collaboration with BISAG-N, has developed the “MAPDRUGS” portal and mobile app. This tool uses Geographic Information System (GIS) data to assist in identifying and eradicating illegal cultivation areas, enhancing efforts to tackle drug production at its source.
The launch of ‘Manas’ and its associated tools marks a significant advancement in the Indian government’s strategy to combat drug addiction. By providing accessible support and encouraging community engagement, these efforts aim to strengthen the fight against drug abuse and foster a healthier, drug-free India.
