The Ministry of Defence has signed contracts worth approximately ₹4,106 crore for the procurement of the GSAT-7C communication satellite for the Indian Air Force and Varunastra Heavy-Weight Torpedoes for the Indian Navy. The agreements are aimed at strengthening the operational capabilities of both services while supporting indigenous defence manufacturing.
The contracts were signed in New Delhi on October 15, 2026, in the presence of A. Anbarasu, Additional Secretary and Director General (Acquisition) Department of Defence.
The ₹2,563-crore contract for GSAT-7C has been signed with Bengaluru-based NewSpace India Limited (NSIL). Indigenously designed, developed, and manufactured, this satellite will enhance secure, reliable and seamless communication for Indian Air Force assets, enabling better coordination and operational effectiveness.
The second contract, worth ₹1,543 crore, was signed with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), Hyderabad, for Varunastra heavy-weight torpedoes. Developed by the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory, Varunastra is an indigenous, ship-launched anti-submarine torpedo equipped with advanced manoeuvring capabilities. It can target enemy submarines from a long distance, thereby strengthening the Indian Navy’s anti-submarine warfare capability.
These agreements support the government’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives by boosting domestic defence production and fostering the development of critical military technologies.
