Maharashtra BJP President Defends EVMs Amid Opposition Criticism

Maharashtra BJP President Chandrashekhar Bawankule defended the use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in elections, amidst criticism from opposition parties.

“When they (opposition) lose, they blame EVM. When they won in Karnataka & Kerala the machine (EVM) was not a problem. Wherever PM Modi wins they say that there is a problem with the EVM machines. In case of defeat, they have to blame someone, and then they blame EVM,” Bawankule said.

The BJP leader’s comments come in response to recurring allegations from opposition parties that EVMs are susceptible to tampering, particularly in constituencies where the BJP has secured victories.

Bawankule pointed out the inconsistency in the opposition’s stance, noting that EVMs were not called into question when the opposition parties won in states like Karnataka and Kerala.

The debate around the reliability of EVMs has been a contentious issue in Indian politics, with several opposition parties demanding a return to ballot paper voting. However, the Election Commission of India has repeatedly asserted the robustness and tamper-proof nature of EVMs.

Bawankule’s statement underscores the BJP’s stance on the issue, suggesting that the allegations against EVMs are a scapegoat for the opposition’s electoral defeats.

The controversy around EVMs continues to be a significant talking point in Indian politics, with both sides of the aisle holding firm to their views. As India gears up for future elections, the debate around the use and reliability of EVMs is likely to persist.
