The countdown has begun for the northern zonal round of the Khelo India women’s wushu league, set to take place at the prestigious Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NSNIS) in Patiala from July 9 to 13. This highly anticipated event will see 350 athletes competing across sub-junior, junior, and senior categories in both Sanda (fighting) and Taolu (forms), showcasing their skills and determination on the national stage.
Organized by SAI Patiala and generously funded by the Department of Sports, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the competition features a substantial prize pool of Rs 7.2 lakh. It is conducted under the auspices of the Wushu Federation of India, drawing participants from states including Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir, and Ladakh.
The northern zonal round follows the success of the South Zonal event held in Karnataka last month, marking a significant step towards the culmination of the league’s annual calendar. It serves as a pivotal qualifier for the national ranking championship, where top performers will vie for coveted spots and recognition in Indian wushu.
Among the star attractions are internationally acclaimed athletes Ayeera Chisti and Komal Nagar, both honing their skills at the NSNIS Patiala Centre and poised to shine in front of their supporters. Ayeera, a seasoned competitor with consecutive gold medals in past Khelo India women’s wushu leagues, expressed her anticipation for competing in familiar surroundings.
“I am thrilled to participate in my third Khelo India women’s wushu league here at NSNIS Patiala, where I have achieved success in the past,” remarked Ayeera, reflecting on her journey since her debut in 2022.
Komal Nagar, known for her formidable presence in the sport at just 19 years old, articulated her aspirations beyond this tournament. “The Khelo India women’s league holds immense importance for aspiring athletes like myself. I am grateful for the government’s support in promoting women’s sports. My personal ambition is to clinch gold at the Asian Games in the 52kg category and become the first Indian woman to achieve this in my weight category. Before that, I aim to secure the gold at the senior Asian championships in China this September,” she affirmed confidently.
The Khelo India women’s wushu league not only aims to crown champions across various categories but also aims to foster a competitive spirit and provide a platform for athletes to excel on the national and international stages. With participants ready to display their prowess and determination, the northern zonal round promises thrilling competitions and potential breakthrough performances in the dynamic discipline of wushu.
