Shiv Sena Leader Hits Back at Mamata Banerjee’s ‘Mrityun Kumbh’ Remark

A fresh political row erupted on Monday as Shiv Sena leader Shaina NC strongly condemned West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s controversial remarks about the Maha Kumbh Mela, calling it the “Mrityun Kumbh” (Kumbh of Death). Shaina NC, in her response, urged Mamata to visit the sacred event, claiming that her remarks were hurtful to the sentiments of millions of Hindus across India.

Mamata Banerjee had recently referred to the Kumbh Mela, one of the largest and most revered religious gatherings in India, as “Mrityun Kumbh,” following the large crowds and concerns over safety during the event. Her statement has sparked intense reactions, with many accusing her of undermining the spiritual significance of the event for Hindus.

In a scathing reply to Mamata Banerjee’s comments, Shaina NC, a prominent face of Shiv Sena, said, “Mamata Banerjee should go to the Maha Kumbh. Only then will she understand that the place she is calling ‘Mrityun Kumbh’ is a sacred site where millions of people gather for the atonement of their sins.”

Shaina further emphasized, “She should go there and do penance. When she gives such a reaction, it hurts the sentiments of crores of Hindus in the country.”

The Shiv Sena leader’s statement underscores the sensitivity surrounding religious events in India, where public figures’ remarks on such topics often attract significant scrutiny. The Kumbh Mela, a centuries-old tradition, is viewed by Hindus as an auspicious occasion for spiritual cleansing, with devotees attending to immerse themselves in holy rivers and seek salvation.

Mamata Banerjee’s comment, made in a broader context of discussing public health concerns during the Kumbh Mela, has been sharply criticized by leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and other Hindu groups. They argue that the West Bengal CM’s words were disrespectful to one of the most prominent religious events in India.

On the other hand, Mamata has defended her position, emphasizing that her remarks were based on concerns regarding the safety of the pilgrims attending the Kumbh, especially during the ongoing pandemic. However, her words have continued to stir controversy, with many calling it an inappropriate choice of language.

The spat between Mamata Banerjee and Shaina NC comes at a time when political tensions between regional parties and the BJP-led alliance are at a high. Leaders from both sides continue to engage in a war of words over various issues, with religion and public health emerging as key points of contention.

As the debate continues to simmer, the focus now shifts to how this issue will affect the political dynamics in West Bengal, Maharashtra, and beyond, especially with state elections on the horizon.
