Mumbai, Maharashtra – The controversy surrounding comedian Kunal Kamra has intensified after Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) MLA Manisha Kayande condemned his recent remarks and actions, calling for his immediate arrest. Kamra, who has often been in the spotlight for his controversial political commentary, has sparked a strong response from political leaders, particularly from the Shinde faction of Shiv Sena.
Kayande, in a fiery statement, criticized Kamra for what she described as an “ugly” song he created and shared, which she claimed was offensive and inappropriate. Her remarks were in reference to a recent post by Kamra, where he was seen holding the Constitution of India. Kayande took issue with Kamra’s display, questioning the comedian’s understanding of the document, saying, “Today, he has posted another photo with the Constitution in his hand, does the Constitution teach us to abuse anyone?”
Kayande, who is known for her outspoken stance on various issues, emphasized the need for strict action against Kamra, adding that such individuals must be held accountable for their actions. “Such people need to be taught a lesson. We have demanded that Kunal Kamra be arrested immediately, and he should be prosecuted,” Kayande said, making it clear that the Shinde faction would not tolerate what they consider offensive behavior.
The MLA further claimed that Kamra’s support from certain political figures, specifically Aaditya Thackeray and Sanjay Raut of the Shiv Sena (Uddhav faction), was an attempt to distract from larger issues facing the party. “Both of them (Aaditya Thackeray and Sanjay Raut) have been exposed by supporting him… It is proof that they prepared this because they don’t have activists now, so they are sending comedians,” she added, suggesting that the Thackeray faction might be using Kamra’s provocations to divert attention from more pressing political matters.
In a strong show of defiance, Kayande evoked the legacy of late Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray, stating, “Had Balasaheb Thackeray been here today, he would have invited those Shiv Sainiks to Matoshree and honoured them.” This statement underlined her view that Kamra’s actions were an affront to the values held by the Shiv Sena and its supporters.
The controversy took another turn as the Mahila Aghadi, a women’s wing of the Shiv Sena, issued a stern challenge. Kayande added, “Mahila Aghadi has challenged that if he (Kunal Kamra) does not apologize, then he will blacken his face wherever we see him.” This threat signals the growing frustration among Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) supporters, who are increasingly vocal in their condemnation of Kamra’s actions.
The ongoing war of words between Kamra and political leaders is fueling debates on freedom of speech, the role of comedians in politics, and the limits of political satire. As the call for Kamra’s arrest gains momentum, it remains to be seen whether the Maharashtra government will take any action against the comedian or if the matter will continue to escalate in the public domain.
Kamra, who has often used his platform to criticize political figures across party lines, has yet to respond to these latest demands. However, with tensions rising and more political figures weighing in, it appears that the row is far from over.
