Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal has announced the launch of the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), a new initiative aimed at democratizing the digital marketplace in India. Speaking at the launch event in Mumbai, Goyal outlined the government’s vision for ONDC and its role in fostering a more inclusive and competitive digital commerce ecosystem.
Goyal emphasized that the government has been in continuous dialogue with various companies to ensure they operate within legal frameworks and contribute to a fair marketplace. “Our government has consistently engaged with different companies and repeatedly requested them to work within the ambit of the law,” Goyal said.
The ONDC initiative, according to Goyal, is designed to replicate the success of the Bharat Interface for Money (BHIM) app and the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). “We have launched ONDC with the same objective as BHIM,” Goyal explained. “What UPI achieved was creating a network that facilitated fintech companies from around the world to innovate and interact. Similarly, ONDC aims to provide a network where all platforms can participate, giving consumers a broader range of options and retail traders a fair chance to compete.”
Goyal highlighted that ONDC is intended to counteract the dominance of a few major players in the digital commerce sector, thereby reducing their influence and providing a level playing field for all participants. “Our goal with ONDC is to ensure that the influence of just two or three players does not overshadow the opportunities available to other businesses and consumers,” he said.
The launch of ONDC is expected to foster greater competition and innovation in the digital commerce space by encouraging the participation of a diverse range of platforms and retailers. It aims to enhance consumer choice and provide a more equitable environment for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to thrive.
The initiative is part of the Indian government’s broader effort to promote digital inclusion and empower various stakeholders in the economy. With ONDC, the government envisions a more robust and inclusive digital marketplace that benefits all participants and drives growth in the sector.
As ONDC begins its rollout, it remains to be seen how effectively it will reshape the digital commerce landscape and address the challenges posed by market concentration. The initiative’s success will depend on its adoption by businesses and its ability to create a fair and competitive environment for all.
