Western Railway (WR) has unveiled a pioneering solution to address the persistent issue of malfunctioning lifts and escalators at its stations across Mumbai. In a breakthrough development announced on Monday, WR introduced a state-of-the-art web-based monitoring system designed to provide real-time updates on the operational status of all lifts and escalators within the city and suburban stations.
Vineet Abhishek, Chief Spokesperson of Western Railway, described the challenges faced by commuters due to frequent breakdowns of escalators and lifts. “Passengers often encounter difficulties when escalators or lifts are out of service, which can happen due to misuse or technical faults,” Abhishek explained. “To tackle this, the Mumbai Central Division of Western Railway has developed a web-based GSM alert monitoring system specifically for escalators and lifts.”
Currently, WR operates 69 lifts and 122 escalators across various stations in Mumbai, crucial for enhancing accessibility, especially for elderly and physically challenged passengers. The newly introduced system aims to streamline maintenance efforts and improve service availability by enabling swift responses to operational disruptions.
“The maintenance staff now receives instantaneous notifications and alerts whenever a lift or escalator stops functioning,” Abhishek highlighted. “This technological advancement has significantly reduced downtime, ensuring that these facilities remain operational for the convenience of our passengers.”
Abhishek further elaborated on the operational benefits of the new system, emphasizing its ability to manage multiple escalators and lifts with fewer personnel. “The centralized monitoring system not only saves manpower but also facilitates quicker responses to maintenance issues,” he added. Maintenance teams are alerted through audio-visual signals on a dedicated mobile app or web interface, enhancing efficiency in addressing operational challenges.
As part of WR’s ongoing efforts to enhance commuter experience, significant expansions were reported in the past financial year. “Nine new lifts were added across key stations such as Bhayandar, Naigaon, and Vasai Road, while six new escalators were commissioned at locations including Khar Road and Vasai Road,” Abhishek revealed. These additions underscore WR’s commitment to modernizing infrastructure and improving passenger amenities.
The implementation of the real-time monitoring system marks a milestone in WR’s efforts to enhance service reliability and customer satisfaction. By leveraging advanced technology and proactive maintenance strategies, Western Railway aims to ensure seamless travel experiences for millions of commuters across Mumbai’s extensive rail network.
