India and Bhutan have taken a significant step towards enhancing digital financial connectivity by announcing a new initiative to enable UPI-based cross-border money transfers between the two countries.
The upcoming facility will allow people to send and receive money internationally in a faster, cheaper, and more convenient manner using Indiaโs Unified Payments Interface (UPI).
UPI to Be Integrated with Postal Transfer System
Under this initiative, the postal networks of both countries will play a key role. The plan involves integrating the system of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) with Indiaโs UPI platform.
This integration will enable seamless cross-border remittances through postal channels, improving accessibility for users in both India and Bhutan.
India Post, Bhutan Post Sign MoU
To formalize cooperation, India Post and Bhutan Post have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
The agreement outlines collaboration in multiple areas, including:
- Postal services
- Technical development
- Logistics connectivity
- Philately (stamp collection)
- Capacity building and knowledge exchange
Focus on Training and Skill Development
Both countries have also emphasized training and skill development in the postal sector. As part of this initiative, Bhutanese postal officials will participate in training programmes in India.
These programmes will be conducted at institutions such as the Rafi Ahmed Kidwai National Postal Academy and other training centres, focusing on operations, management, and emerging technologies.
Boost to Digital Postal and Logistics Systems
India and Bhutan have agreed to deepen cooperation in the technology sector, including:
- Digital postal systems
- Digital address code implementation
- Enhanced logistics services
These measures are expected to improve efficiency and service delivery across postal networks.
Cultural Exchange and Financial Inclusion
The two countries will also continue collaboration in cultural exchange and philately, with Bhutan Post invited to participate in stamp exhibitions เคเคฏเฅเคเคฟเคค in India.
India has further offered to share its expertise in leveraging postal networks for financial inclusion, aiming to expand access to banking and financial services for people in Bhutan.
