The Union Ministry of Education has urged the timely registration and verification of applications under the ‘National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme’ (NMMSS) for the 2026-27 academic year.
The Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSEL) reviewed the implementation of this scheme during a regional workshop held in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, on October 14. The workshop focused on streamlining application processing and ensuring timely scholarship disbursement through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP).
The workshop, led by A. Srija, Economic Adviser at DoSEL, brought together officials from state, district and institutional levels. Discussions focused on registration processes, application verification and technical challenges. Approximately 40 district nodal officers and five institutional nodal officers from Bhopal district participated in the session, along with selected scholarship beneficiaries and their parents.
The last date to submit applications for the 2026–27 academic year is October 31, 2026. Institutional nodal officers must complete the verification process by November 15, while district nodal officers have until November 30. The Ministry emphasized that the verification must be accurate and timely, ensuring that eligible students receive their scholarships.
Under the NMMSS, eligible students from economically weaker sections receive an annual scholarship of ₹12,000. The scheme aims to reduce school dropouts after Class VIII and encourage students to continue their education up to Class XII. The selection examination for this scheme is conducted by the respective states and union territories, while registration and the disbursement of scholarships are managed through the NSP.
