PM Surya Ghar Crosses 50 Lakh Rooftop Solar Installations; Adds 1 Lakh Beneficiary Homes Every Six Days

Mumbai: Rooftop solar systems have been installed in over 50.6 lakh households across the country under the ‘PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana’. This achievement, realized in just two years, highlights the rapid progress being made compared to the 7.94 lakh solar projects installed over the previous decade.

According to the ministry, this scheme is benefiting 100,000 families every six days, making it one of the fastest-growing clean energy programs in the world. The Ministry stated that the ‘PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana’, with a total outlay of ₹75,021 crore, has become the world’s largest rooftop solar program. The pace of installations has more than tripled over the last nine months; the figure rose from 5,038 installations per day in October 2025 to approximately 16,328 installations per day in July 2026. In July alone, 5.06 lakh rooftop solar installations were completed, marking the highest monthly figure since the scheme’s inception.

The government has released subsidies amounting to ₹28,024 crore directly to beneficiaries through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system. As a result, approximately 19 lakh families now have zero electricity bills. Additionally, during the 2024-25 financial year, over 12 lakh families earned a total of ₹421 crore by selling surplus electricity to the grid, generating an average annual additional income of around ₹3,500 per family.

Under the utility-led aggregation model, 1.6 lakh rooftop solar installations have been completed for PMAY, BPL, and SC/ST families across four states, while approval for implementation has been granted in 12 states. Meanwhile, 21.87 lakh loans have been sanctioned at a concessional interest rate of 5.75%, with 17.5 lakh installations completed through these loans.

This scheme has also created a vast ecosystem of vendors and employment opportunities. It involves 34,219 registered vendors, of whom 29,469 are actively operating across the country. More than 2.32 lakh people have been trained under capacity-building programs designed to support the rooftop solar value chain. Overall, 14.8 GW of rooftop solar capacity has been commissioned under this scheme so far.

This scheme operates entirely on a digital platform, where all processes such as application, approval, and subsidy disbursement are conducted online. It features a system integrated with over 80 DISCOMs, a paperless loan process, digital net metering, vendor ratings, and direct subsidy transfer to beneficiaries’ accounts via PFMS.

To promote the installation of rooftop solar systems, the government has simplified the approval process for systems up to 10 kW, waived application and net metering charges across 32 states and Union Territories, provided incentives to DISCOMs and urban local bodies, and conducted approximately 23,000 third-party quality inspections.

This scheme has also accelerated the installation of solar systems in government buildings. Out of the 41,542 central government buildings identified as suitable for solar installations, systems with a total capacity of 872 MW have already been installed in 25,255 of them. States have installed solar systems with a combined capacity of 1,450 MW across 81,329 government buildings. In total, rooftop solar systems have been installed on 1.06 lakh government buildings.
