Maharashtra MLA Abu Azmi Suspended from Budget Session, Deputy CM Eknath Shinde Warns of Further Action

Maharashtra Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA Abu Azmi has been suspended from the Budget session of the Maharashtra Assembly following his remarks on Mughal ruler Aurangzeb, which triggered strong political backlash. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde reaffirmed the state government’s firm stance against any disrespect to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, calling Azmi’s suspension a necessary step.

Speaking to the media, Shinde stated, “Keeping in mind the sentiments of the people of Maharashtra, he has been suspended by the Speaker. Whoever disrespects Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj will not be spared by Maharashtra. This is just the first step—he has been given a clear warning that if he repeats such actions, Maharashtra will not forgive him.”

Azmi’s controversial remarks about Aurangzeb had drawn severe criticism from leaders across party lines, with demands for strict action against him. The BJP and Shiv Sena leaders had strongly opposed his comments, calling them an insult to Maharashtra’s history and heritage.

The suspension has further intensified political tensions in the Maharashtra Assembly, with opposition parties accusing the government of using the issue for political mileage. However, the ruling alliance has defended the move, emphasizing that Maharashtra will not tolerate any insult to its icons.

As the Budget session continues, all eyes are on whether further action will be taken against Azmi and how the opposition responds to this development.
